Max Holloway Career Overview

Early Career

Maxwell Holloway was born on December 4, 1991, in Waianae, Hawaii. He entered professional mixed martial arts at age 18, working his way through regional circuits before attracting attention at a national level. His relentless work ethic, natural boxing ability, and exceptional cardiovascular conditioning defined him from early in his career.

Holloway's willingness to accept difficult fights on short notice and his ability to perform at a high level against more experienced opponents helped him build a reputation as one of the most resilient competitors in the sport.

UFC Career

Holloway signed with the UFC in 2012 and made his promotional debut at UFC 143. His early UFC record included both wins and losses, but he consistently showed improvement and refused to wilt against elite opposition.

He suffered an early defeat to Conor McGregor at UFC Fight Night 26 in August 2013, but rather than derailing his career, that loss became part of a motivation-defining chapter. The two are now scheduled to meet again at UFC 329 in July 2026.

Featherweight Championship Reign

Max Holloway became the undisputed UFC Featherweight Champion in June 2017 when he defeated Jose Aldo, and he went on to have one of the most dominant championship reigns in the history of the featherweight division. His run included successful defenses against some of the top contenders in the world.

He set numerous records during his time as champion, including significant strike output milestones and consecutive wins in the featherweight division.

Fighting Style — Strengths

  • Volume striking: Holloway throws more punches per round than almost any fighter on the roster, which allows him to dominate opponents across all five rounds.
  • Conditioning: His cardio is considered among the best in the UFC, allowing him to maintain output throughout a full fight.
  • Pressure fighting: He moves forward constantly, cutting off the octagon and applying sustained pressure that breaks down defensive fighters.
  • Combination punching: His boxing combinations are fluid, diverse, and accurate, keeping opponents unable to time his offense.
  • Durability: Holloway has demonstrated exceptional chin and recovery ability against elite competition.

Notable Wins

  • Jose Aldo — TKO — UFC 218 — Featherweight Championship Defense
  • Jose Aldo — Unanimous Decision — UFC 212 — Interim Featherweight Championship
  • Brian Ortega — TKO — UFC 231 — Featherweight Championship Defense
  • Arnold Allen — TKO — UFC Kansas City (2023)
  • Justin Gaethje — KO — UFC 300 — BMF Title

BMF Championship

In April 2024, Max Holloway captured the UFC BMF (Baddest Mother F***er) Championship with a stunning last-second knockout of Justin Gaethje at UFC 300, cementing his place as one of the most electrifying finishers in MMA history. The performance is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in recent UFC pay-per-view history.

UFC 329 — The Rematch

More than 13 years after their first meeting, Max Holloway meets Conor McGregor again — this time at Welterweight — in the main event of UFC 329 on July 11, 2026 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Holloway brings a far more decorated resume and far greater championship experience to this rematch, entering as one of the most experienced and accomplished fighters on the UFC roster.
